The Grand Theatre presents Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE, 3/8-24

The-Grand-Theatre-presents-Arthur-Millers-THE-CRUCIBLE-20010101

The Grand Theatre is presenting Arthur Miller's American Classic play The Crucible March 8-24, 2012 with 7:30 pm performances Wednesday through Saturday and 2:00 pm matinees on select Saturdays. Tickets can be purchased through the Grand Theatre box office at (801) 957-3322 or through the website www.the-grand.org.

Mark Fossen directs and was director of last year's American Classic play The Glass Menagerie, also at the Grand Theatre. Cast members for The Crucible include Cassandra Stokes-Wylie as Elizabeth Proctor, David Hanson as John Proctor, and Sahara Hayes as Abigail Williams. Local favorite Max Robinson plays Judge Danforth. Other local favorites in the cast include Ron Frederickson, Richard Scharine, Stephen Williams, Toni Byrd, and Barb Smith.

Miller wrote the play in 1952 as a reaction to Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Committee on Un-American Activities, which was established to eliminate supposed Communist sympathizers. "The Crucible is an amazingly relevant play," said Mark Fossen. "I feel I see it completely differently, coming back to it after 9/11. It's not just about Salem or McCarthy any more. We may no longer be searching for witches or Communists, but the idea of what true fear can make us do it still very real." The Crucible won the 1953 Tony Award for Best Play.

In addition to the productions, the Grand Theatre will present a free lecture by Joseph McCarthy scholar Dr. David Oshinsky on March 7 to discuss his book "A Conspiracy So Immense: The World of Joe McCarthy" and how it relates to the Grand Theatre production of "The Crucible". He will be speaking at the Salt Lake Community College Taylorsville/Redwood Campus in the Oak Room at 12:00 p.m. He will continue the conversation later that evening on the Grand Theatre stage at 6:00 p.m. at a question and answer session moderated by two distinguished SLCC Faculty members. The discussion will focus on Dr. Oshinsky's knowledge of the McCarthy era and how it influenced Arthur Miller and other artists of the time. The events with Dr. Oshinsky are free and open to the public.

Play dates: March 8 through 24. Evening performances 7:30 pm Wednesday - Saturday, matinees March 10 and 17 at 2:00 pm.
Location: The Grand Theatre, 1575 South State Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84115
Tickets: Prices are $10 - 24 for adults. Seniors and students receive a discounted rate.
Reservations: 801-957-3322 or online at www.the-grand.org
