SCERA Hosts 7th Annual Free Celebration of Veterans Event, 11/10

SCERA will honor Veteran's Day on Saturday Nov. 10 with a free USO-style show that will feature patriotic and fun entertainment and presentations in the spirit of celebrating those who have served their country in the armed forces.

Scheduled for 11:00am at the SCERA Center for the Arts (745 South State, Orem), it's a 90-minute production emceed by performer and SCERA staff member Shawn Mortensen, who will also sing a beautiful rendition of "The Prayer" as part of the event. Admission is free, and no tickets or reservations are required. Groups from senior citizen and assisted living centers are welcome and encouraged to attend.

"SCERA is honored to have a small part in honoring our veterans by providing this free community event for the seventh year in a row," says SCERA President & CEO Adam J. Robertson. "We'll even have a few military vehicles displayed on the front lawn, courtesy of George Stokes."

Among the featured performers will be The Bluth Sisters (Delayne Dayton, Delonne Hucks and Brandalee Streeter) performing the national anthem as well as a medley called "Broadway Baby"; the Mountain View High School Choir under the direction of RoseMary Matthews; SCERA's adult repertory dance company, Pulse, will perform a contemporary piece entitled "America the Beautiful"; Orem's Miss Outstanding Teen Maddie Millard will sing and speak about what freedom means to her; SCERA Youth Theatre's General Ruckus group will perform "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"; and the junior and adult winner of the 2012 Celebrity Vocal Competition, Luke Alhmen and Rachel Kehr will also sing.

In addition to the musical entertainment, the always popular BYU Air Force ROTC will perform their precision rifle drill in dress uniform; and SCERA will continue its tradition of having the American Legion Post 72 to lead the Parade of Service Flags featuring the different musical medleys of each division of the Armed Services.

"Every year we try to put together a show for everybody where veterans can bring their children and grandchildren," Mortensen says. The Orem Heritage Museum, which will be celebrating its grand opening at the historic Seminary building just south of the SCERA Center, will be open for free tours after the event, and several veterans will be on hand to share their experiences. They really make you appreciate our country and our freedom."
