BWW Reviews: Jane Austen's EMMA Brought to Joyful Life at Pioneer Theatre Co.

Jane-Austens-Emma-Brought-to-Joyful-Life-at-Pioneer-Theatre-Company-20010101

Jane Austen’s novel, Emma, has been brought to joyful life in Jon Jory’s play adaptation at Pioneer Theatre Company.

It is difficult to imagine a production of this play more expertly presented than it is here.

The story is about Emma Woodhouse, who enjoys being a matchmaker for her friends and acquaintances but who insists she would be perfectly happy never to find a mate of her own.  The plot follows her journey as she discovers she doesn’t fully understand everything there is know about love.

Just as the title character is the heart of the novel, Broadway actress Nisi Sturgis as Emma is the driving force of the cast.  She exudes the intensity and charisma required of her by the role while still allowing room for impactful moments of vulnerability.

Other standouts in a cast that is evenly superb across the board are West End actress Katie Fabel as Emma’s reserved friend, Harriet; Jordan Coughtry as Emma’s suitor, Frank Churchill; PTC veteran Anne Stewart Mark as spinster Miss Bates; Michael Sharon as Emma’s friend, Mr. Knightley; and Broadway actor Jeffrey Hayenga as Emma’s sickly father, Mr. Woodhouse.

Another star of the show is the scenic design by Broadway designer Bill Clarke.  At first glance, the unit set is deceptively simple.  As the action moves along, however, it becomes clear that the set is able to effectively evoke both interior and exterior locations.  The scenic design also constantly surprises with new tricks that delight the audience, such as moving set pieces, turntables, and snow effects.

Also notable are the costume design by Brenda Van der Wiel and the hair and makeup design by Amanda French.  Their attention to detail always firmly places the characters in the appropriate place and time with no anachronistic elements.

On opening night it was sometimes difficult to hear the actors, so seating as close to the stage as possible is recommended.

Emma will be performed at Pioneer Theatre Company through March 3, 2012.  For tickets, call the box office at 801-581-6961 or visit www.pioneertheatre.org.
